Trading

Many of you know we trade for goods and service. I guess certain comments got my butt in a knot and I had to say something.

Late last night (8:00pm) a farmer arrives at our door asking if Kirk could work on/fix his equipment in the morning. Not really knowing what needs to be repaired the answer is usually; Yes, bring it over. (as he grumbles "don't people know what time it is?")

What sounds like a fast and easy job, got complicated. Surprise. And of course, he needs it ASAP. Along with everyone one else that arrived today. Whew, it is non-stop. Too bad Kirk doesn't charge extra for "rush pressure".

Aluminum on steel

This project was a bit of a test.

Attach aluminum to customer's old steel frame trailer.

Kirk fabricates and welds on aluminum fenders with built-in/protected lights

and removable sides.

The customer plans on using this to haul wood. The hitch on the back is to pull a log-splitter. (click on pictures to enlarge)

Thanksgiving Harvest

The weather is very hot for this time of the year. The farmers are working hard and taking advantage of this great weather. Today "is" Thanksgiving here in Canada. There is a lot of action behind our home - harvesting the beans and planting next years wheat crop. (I think it is wheat?)

Stair case to water

Another specialty job complete. Now the customer can get on his boat from his back yard. The steps are suspended from wall and designed to be removed before winter.
It is fortunate that water level was low for the installation.

Our new used Kubota

I mentioned at the beginning of August that we purchased a tractor. It finally got put to use yesterday, mowing weeds. We have a good crop of them. Actually, it has been used often to move equipment and heavy items like motors around in the shop. (I wasn't there to take pictures) The future plan for it's use, to clear the driveway of snow in the winter. Now the talk is, to purchase a used snow blower attachment. (it never ends) My plan was to use the tiller attachment to turn over my sad looking garden. Guess that will have to wait. Tiller needs work and that may be a winter project. Oh well. Kirk loves his tractor and that is all that counts.

In the mean time, I aggressively cut grass with my favorite ride. Maybe too aggressively. With all the bouncing around I put my back out. I can't move. Hoping the chiropractor is in on Saturdays.

The turkey hunt?

Gee, I know I keep on about prices here but I just can't help it. Last Tuesday I bought a frozen turkey at $1.79 lb. I figured, that is about as good as it's going to get around here. Mind you there is only one grocery store in town so not a lot of choices.

Kirk felt I bought it too soon as he figured prices should go down the closer we get to Thanksgiving. (which is Oct. 8 here in Canada) He, of course, is still thinking in North Carolina mode and prices. I had to remind him the days of 69 cents per lb for turkey is not going to happen here.

Well, low and behold, the local IGA flyer arrived today. For all your Thanksgiving needs, your best price store brand frozen turkey is $1.99 lb. and it goes up from there. Yippee!

In short, Kirk was glad I shopped early. Besides, it might take until next week to thaw.

Sticker shock!

Kirk went out to buy a new battery for my truck. It's been a long time since we needed a battery. Today, Kirk got a shock. Not from the battery, from the price. The shock feeling feels the same, either way.

We were use to spending $35 to $60 for a car battery.
This small one cost $110. - with tax it came to $125.40.
Now, we haven't been out of the USA that long, will someone let us know if prices of batteries have gone up that much in the south?
Our dollars are a par right now. We have a mind to get us a load of batteries for the future. Heck, be a black-market battery dealer.

Stranger to Friend

Some of the best plans can change with the arrival of a stranger.

I had every intention of spending the morning with my new little friend Jakeb because he entered the Forest Fair Baby Contest. 44 participants in total. Have my camera charged and ready to do some serious photography. (the following are two of my favorite shots -click on photo to enlarge)
At 6:44 am a woman walked up to the shop asking for help. Kirk called me outside, as it started to drizzle, to talk to the lady. I could tell she was upset and didn't know how to start with her story, as all I was getting fragmented sentences. We went inside, had some coffee as she explained her bizarre night. She couldn't understand how she got into the situation she got into and yet I could understand. (Been there, done that, around her age) I explained I would drive her back to London, which is an hour away, but I had to go to the fair first.

She had a shower, we ate breakfast and off to the fair we go. I promised Kirk I would home by noon. The baby contest started at 10:00 am so I didn't get to take all the pictures I wanted to, or find out who won. Mind you, they are all cute and all winners.

On our drive to London we talked a lot and started bonding. Her name is Patty (age 42) and I feel I have a new friend. Life throws us curves and I hope, I helped someone straighten one out.

Black Flies (O'Canada)

We don't have black flies right now but, for some reason the "fresh" country air produced by the spread of manure is bringing out the house flies in droves. At least house flies don't pick your bones. Thank goodness!

Request for an Easement

This is a good one. We may not be the brightest little bulbs on this earth but some things just don't figure right with us. So, hear is the story as we understand it........

Last month we received a letter from the Municipality of Lambton Shores requesting an easement across our property. The easement would be approximately 10-15 metres in width, with construction tentatively scheduled for the 2008 construction season. This request is because the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) prefer not to have construction of water mains within the highway right-of way. (We are on HWY 21)

Kirk gets a call today asking if we have decided on granting an easement. Here is punch line....

They are going to charge US, $10,000 to dig up OUR property. Kirk let them know, we are still undecided. My fear is, someone is going to decide for us and we are not going to like it.

Sad News of Allen Forrest

We received a sad phone call Sept. 14 at 5 PM from a close friend of ours- Dale, that Al Forrest, our brother-in-law died. We receive the following email this morning.

Hi Folks, This is a very sad message I'm sending you today. My dear husband Allen died yesterday at 2:00pm. He has been ill for over 4 years but we continued to camp and kept up as best we could, most of you knew he was on oxygen and the past few months have been very difficult ones for us both. He is being laid out at Garrett's Funeral Home in Waynesville, NC and we are having a memorial service on Monday Sept. 17th at 2PM. Thank all of you for your prayers and know we will miss him terribly.

What a party!

What a Great Day!

Life is good! Because of wonderful people.

My IGA buddies came to visit. The weather was perfect. Of course, the company was perfect. The food was good and we hot-tub. I'm use to hot water (in more ways than one) so I may have had the temperature set a little too high for the young ladies. But, they persevered.

What makes this a great day for me, is the fact that the young ladies would want to spend a day with someone old enough to be their mother, and a stranger only year ago.

Not having any children of my own, it was an honor to have them visit.
